数据科学专业能做什么?
Data science is a new, multidisciplinary field that combines scientific methods from various fields to uncover knowledge and insights from data. Data scientists use techniques from statistics, computer science (algorithms/probability theory), mathematics, engineering and other disciplines. They analyze data in order to find answers to questions, solve problems and make predictions. In summary – the role of a data scientist can be described as “discovering patterns in data”. We can break up this role into different skill sets:
The skills needed to become a data scientist might not all come naturally to one person. For example, if you are not an ‘numerate’ person by nature(e.g. less at math than most people), you may need to work harder on your quantitative skills to develop them sufficiently. Or maybe you didn’t take any computing subjects at school or uni but have always been fascinated by how things work behind the scenes in IT. Either way——as long as there is a will, there is a way!
For anyone wanting to get started with their data science journey, I would suggest working through some online courses first. There are now many free and paid short course offerings available via Coursera, edX, Udemy etc - these are a great way for those who want to explore topics, build core skills and gain confidence in what they can achieve. One good place to start would be Google's Data Analysis Fundamentals course, which has been taken by over half a million learners globally so far!
LinkedIn Learning(formerly Lynda.com) also offers countless video tutorials taught by industry thought leaders and experts-a great way to learn on the go and upskill in any area you desire.
What are the career opportunities like after completing my MS in DS?
As mentioned above, data science draws upon techniques and tools from a wide variety of fields. Therefore, it opens doors to numerous industries and roles ——from financial services, to telecommunications, to government organisations. The opportunities are vast and ever-growing.
